I am working in the area of video and sound installation. My general approach to these media is minimal. The fundamental structure of my time-based installations is the notion of a constant audio/visual environment, determined not by a specific beginning or end, but by the willingness of the spectator to engage with it, for any length of time. At the centre of my work, is the interplay of visual and acoustic information, and its effect on the mood, emotion and state of the willing participant. The conscious and subliminal effects of image and sound on the human mind are hereby of most importance, as well as the synaesthetic connection of the two prevailing senses, seeing and hearing. The ‘colour of a sound’ and the ‘sound of a colour’, form the basis of any visual-acoustic relation. Movements and textures in the video, alongside various chance operations and compositional structures are then used to create melodic elements and rhythmic qualities with the mainly recorded sound samples. The basic underlying systems, used for the arrangement of the audible components, are microtonal scales. These tonal scales are constructed in just intonation (a method of tuning, alternative to the western 12-ton scale), to accommodate the individual need of each installation. In
order to create an environment for the time-based work, an often
almost sculptural installation is constructed to accommodate the
audiovisual elements, and to increase the physical presents of the
work. |
